Australians eat a truckload of meat. We average 111kg of meat per person per year. This is equal 304g of meat per day. The Australian dietary guideline suggests 65g of meat per day. So we are eating FIVE TIMES more than the recommended amount! What the … ?
What’s so bad about eating a lot of meat? Simple. You have higher chances of getting any or all of these:
heart disease, type 2 diabetes, bowel cancer, hypertension, antibiotic resistance and a shorter life span
In Australia, 40% of our cattle are given growth hormones. In 2011 in the US over 80% of all antibiotics were used in animal agriculture.
More and more environmentalists and scientists agree that reducing meat consumption is the single most effective thing we can do to help the environment, whether it is for reducing land degradation, saving precious water resources, increasing global food production, reducing pollution or stopping the escalation of climate change.
While it is fantastic to see developing countries recovering from terrible poverty, it would be a disaster if they develop our meat addiction. Meat consumption in China, India and South East Asia is going through the roof. Let’s show them a better way! We give credit to Paul, Mary and Stella McCartney for launching the Meat Free Monday not-for-profit campaign in 2009. They knew way back then! We share their logo because it’s so cute and all about heart!
